Wolf Cubs
At birth, wolf pups weigh less than half a kilogram (about a pound). Newborns cannot hear and their blue eyes, which will eventually turn to a burnished gold, are tightly closed at birth. But they dopossess the powerful sense of smell that will eventually help them navigate the wild. Initially, however, they use this sense to find theirway to milk (with a few helpful nudges from mom).
Because nursing mothers and their newborn pups, or "whelps", arevery vulnerable, the mother establishes a separate den, called a "whelping den", where she will bear and care for her newborns. The pack's powerful sense of community is deeply important at this point, for as the mother cares for the newborns, the whole pack chips in to bring her food, protect mother and pups - and even babysit.
By around two weeks of age, about the same time as their eyes open, wolf pups begin to walk. Like their domesticated cousins, they play constantly to develop the skills they will need later in life. Games of chase, ambush, dominance, and tug-of-war using bones, feathers, and skins are among their favourite pastimes. By seven or eight months of age, they have begun to hunt and are well on their way to beingfull members of the pack.
This set is the third issue of the Specimen Sets with Young Wildlife collection. This series, which has already six differents sets, were released between 2010 to 2015.
