Description
Cartagena: Escape Diaries is based on the classic game Cartagena and features multiple ways to play.
In the original game, now dubbed the "First Escape", each player has a group of six animal pirates, and you want to be the first to have all six escape through the tortuous underground passage that connects the fortress to the port, where a sloop is waiting for them.
To move a pirate, you need to play a card from your hand. Each card bears one of six symbols, and when you play a card, you move one of your pirates forward to the next matching symbol in the tunnel, leapfrogging over matching symbols where another pirate already stands. The only way to get more cards, however, is to move backwards; more specifically, you move one of your pirates backwards to the first space that holds one or two pirates, drawing one or two cards after doing so. Each turn, you take 1-3 actions, whether moving forward or backward or both.
When you move a pirate to the end of the track, it jumps on the sloop where it must await the other pirates in its crew. With every step toward victory, though, you have fewer and fewer pirates to move each turn, possibly locking you in to actions you don't want, so be sure to plan ahead and not leave yourself empty-handed!
In the "Second Escape", called "Follow the Captain", you get to place a captain hat on one of your pirates and use the powers of this leader. In the "Third Escape", "Risky Rafts", you can take a chance to escape the fortress more quickly on a leaky raft — and risk sinking in the attempt. By combining the Second and Third Escapes, you have the "Fourth Escape" — "All Together Now!"

| J'ai Du Rhum Dans Ma Chaloupe !!! | |
| Des pirates, une évasion, voilà un thème fort intéressant. Mais le thème n'est là que pour habiller l'ensemble, la mécanique de jeu étant plus abstraite et plus ou moins calquée sur les dames chinoises. Ce qui n'en fait pas un jeu inintéressant, bien au contraire. Et qui fait bien fonctionner nos petites cellules grises qui plus est. Car malgré la simplicité des règles (3 actions par tour; jouez une carte pour déplacer l'un de vos pirates sur une case inoccupée portant la même image, ou reculez un pirate jusqu'au(x) prochains pirate(s) présents dans le tunnel, pour piocher autant de cartes qu'il y a de pirates, sachant qu'un groupe est limité à 3 personnes; l'objectif est d'être le premier à avoir ses 6 pirates dans la chaloupe, les autres passent par-dessus bord grâce au supplice de la planche... ) ce jeu se révèle assez riche. J'ai comparé ce jeu aux dames chinoises, car de la même manière, la bonne stratégie ne consiste pas à aller poser rapidement un gus sur le bateau, mais à essayer de les garder groupés, ou de les grouper avec les pirates des autres joueurs, de manière à d'une part faire avancer plus vite ceux qui sont à la traine, mais également, par la règle de la reculade, de pouvoir au mieux piocher 2 cartes à chaque fois (potentiellement 6 cartes dans le tour donc si vous n'avancez personne). Cette reculade étant la seule façon de piocher des cartes, inutile de dire que cela en fait un des piliers de la stratégie. Evidemment, il faut faire attention à ne pas trop avantager vos adversaires, et il est parfois profitable de faire avancer un pirate sur des images déjà jouées, pour ensuite reculer un peu et piocher des cartes, de manière à ce que le prochain joueur ne puisse pas se déplacer trop loin. C'est sur cette interaction indirecte qu'il faudra se focaliser. Après, suivant les personnes avec qui vous jouez, libre à vous d'ajouter un peu de roleplay dans vos parties pour mettre un peu plus d'ambiance de piraterie, invectiver vos adversaires, titiller, etc, car le jeu reste assez abstrait sinon, malgré les illustrations. Il existe une variante appelée, "Tortuga". Tous les joueurs ont leurs cartes face visible, et une rivière de 12 cartes face visible est constituée et seront donc les futures cartes à piocher; ces cartes seront à prendre dans l'ordre. La rivière n'est reconstituée que lorsque les 12 cartes ont été piochées. Etant donné que chaque joueur étudie les cartes des autres. |
