Le livre s'inspire des livres de Jane’s Information Group, spécialisé dans les sujets militaires, aérospatiaux et des transports. Les caractéristiques et images se basent sur les modèles 3D des jeux, les informations textuelles et visuelles créées depuis le début de la saga, et le travail sur les modèles de Halo : Fleet Battles.[5] Les séries de livres Technical Readouts de Battletech, Ship Recognition Manual de Star Trek et GURPS Vehicles de GURPS ont été citées comme inspirations originales par Kenneth Peters.
