Description
It's been a long year, and you’ve been looking forward to a nice, relaxing vacation at the Grand Hotel Abaddon. But what started out as a quiet retreat has become something else entirely. Strange things have been happening all around you. Could ghosts be behind these mysterious incidents, as the other guests and hotel staff seem to believe, or is there a more rational explanation?
The Grand Hotel Abaddon is a cooperative adventure game, played over three chapters. During the game, the choices you make determine what happens next. Explore the hotel, question guests, investigate rooms, and wander hidden passageways. Each player takes on a different role, cooperating to uncover hidden secrets. Only by working together will you be able to solve the mystery of the Grand Hotel Abaddon. With multiple possible endings, your choices will decide how the story ends!

A most enjoyable addition to the series
Another new one in Kosmos' series of what one could call "analog point and click adventure games". Travel through rooms, talk with NPCs, combine items with room elements and other items to open more areas and reveal more of the plot. While split into "parts" to accommodate multi-session play, this one doesn't lock you off from much of the previous areas, letting you explore pretty widely. (The map does get pretty big because of this. Leave a sizeable space - a few room cards' worth in every direction - open in the middle of your table when you start, to save mid-game adjusting of things.) The main plot of arriving at a monastery-turned-hotel just in time for mysterious incidents to break out was interesting and the atmosphere was excellent. I also enjoyed chasing my character's personal goal through the Abaddon. (Each character needs to discover said goal as a first step, you don't start with it. The subplots are optional and don't interact with each other, though they do touch on the main plot.) Difficulty is perhaps subjective, but this one seemed quite easy for experienced players. We used the hint book sparingly on this one - only a few odd spots like escaping the hedge maze confounded us. A suggestion - play with all four characters, even if someone's doubling up. There's no hidden info so it doesn't break anything, and frankly I don't see a person playing through this a second time just to get a storyline they missed. (Like all point-and-clicks, it's not a tempting replay when you know all the solutions.) Atmospheric, fun, and kept us up late to finish it in one sitting. While Monochrome, Inc. still holds top spot in my mind this one has easily taken a close second. Unlike the Exit games it's reusable, so play it then pass it along to a friend, or put it in the closet until you've forgotten enough of it to make it new again. |

Nice game of investigation and exploration
I like this game series very much. In this longer story (three 90 minute parts) we explore the hotel and try to solve our quests. I enjoyed the first chapter less, but the rest of the story made up for it for me. |
