Description
First Rat is a Core Game for up to five players, which can also be played solo. Numerous strategies, special skills, and a variable setup create new excitement for every game. On every turn, players have to decide whether they want to move one of their rats up to five spaces or if they want to move multiple rats up to three spaces instead – which is only possible if the rats end their movement on spaces of the same color. And if there are already rats in that space, it also costs one cheese per rat! Moving across the junkyard, players collect resources, buy (or steal) useful items, build parts of the rocket or train their Rattronauts, in order to collect as many Victory Points as possible. Who will be the First Rat?

Lots of hype, but not my jam
First Rat is recommended all over the board game world. However, it is not for me. The positives: The artwork is very nice and thematic. Interesting mechanisms to move up the different tracks. The things that don't hit as much with me: I do not like the victory conditions. I like the first one to get all four of your rats to the top but the 8 cube per certain condition (resources spent or running around the bottom track) seems to always end the game in a very anticlimactic way. There's lots of potential for this game. Maybe house rules would help a little |

Rats running around a junkyard and collecting materials to build a space rocket - that's just what you want. The humorous theme hides an excellent game. Simple rules, beautiful design, great gameplay - surprisingly one of the best games of 2022 for me. |
