The telephone story

The 1997 $100 gold coin, designed by Canadian artist Donald H. Curley, honours the creative genius of Alexander Graham Bell, who literally changed the world with his invention of the telephone. The year 1997 marks the 150th anniversary of Bell's birth. Born in Scotland in 1847, Bell emigrated to Brantford, Ontario, with his parents in 1870. The son of a speech teacher, he followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a vocal physiologist, teaching the deaf to speak and eventually becoming a professor at Boston University. In 1874, while visiting his parents in Ontario, Bell carried out the experiments that first gave him the inspiration of the telephone. Using a human eardrum to translate sounds into visible markings, he realized that a simple membrane would modulate an electrical current just as the eardrum did sound waves. Two years later, the prototype telephone was developed in Boston. The coin's observe bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Dora Pédery-Hunt.
This coin is part of the 100-dollar coin collection which began in 1976. A coin has been released every year since then.
