Description
Pierre Gaultier de La Vérendrye
From 1732 to 1743, Pierre Gaultier de Varennes et de La Vérendrye (1685-1749) brought the era of exploration beyond the Great Lakes region, allowing New France to expand its western frontier—and its fur trade—to present-day Manitoba. While the exploration of the Saskatchewan and Assiniboine Rivers went largely unheralded in his time, La Vérendrye has since emerged as a figure who embodies the voyageur spirit, and is truly one of the great explorers in Canadianhistory.
