100thanniversary of the first wireless transmission across the Atlantic (1901-2001)

Guglielmo Maconi (1874-1937) had barely begun his scientific career when he found inspiration in the works of Heinrich Hertz and began exploring the notion of transmitting messages without wires. Marconi's experiments took him from his native Italy to England where he succeeded in transmitting signals over increasingly greatdistances. In 1896, at just 22 years of age, Marconi filed his patentfor wireless telegraphy and a year later, founded the world's first wireless telegraph and signal company. In order to fully develop the commercial potential of his technology, Marconi knew that he would have to conquer the Atlantic Ocean - a huge gamble in financial and scientific terms. Despite the common belief that radio waves could not followthe curvature of the earth, Marconi convinced his Board of Directors to his experiment. On December 12, 1901, the Morse code letter "S" wastransmitted from Poldhu in Cornwall (England ) to Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland (Canada) - and the age of wireless communication was born.
