This quarter is the third in 2025 and 18th overall in the American Women Quarters Program. 

The American Women Quarters™ Program is a four-year series celebrating the accomplishments and contributions made by women to the development and history of the U.S. Beginning in 2022, and continuing through 2025, the Mint will issue five new quarters each year featuring reverse designs honoring a group of prominent American women.

Dr. Vera Rubin is featured on the eighteenth coin released in this program.

Dr. Vera Rubin was an American astronomer whose pioneering work provided crucial evidence for the existence of dark matter. Despite struggling to gain recognition as a female astronomer in a male-dominated field, Rubin became a leading figure in astrophysics and an advocate for women in STEM. Her research revolutionized our understanding of the universe and continues to shape modern cosmology.

The reverse (tails) features a profile of Dr. Vera Rubin gazing upward, smiling as she contemplates the cosmos. She is surrounded by a spiral galaxy and other celestial bodies. Inscriptions include “DR. VERA RUBIN,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The additional inscription, “DARK MATTER," the invisible mass found in our galaxy, is inscribed at the bottom of the design.

The common obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2025.”
