Description
Skill, professionalism, and teamwork describe the key characterictics of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. Audiences world-wide have enjoyed the aerobatics of the Canadair CT-114 Tutor. The Tutor was designed in 1958 as an all purpose jet training aircraft for the flight instruction of military pilots. This aircraft s an all metal, side by side two seat monoplane with a single jet engine. The high maneuverability and relatively slow speed of the Tutor is ideally suited for aerobatics. A well tuned engine enhances engine response in low level flying. The basic Tutor was slightly modified for use by Snowbirds. Required was a smoke generating system with a unique peint scheme for added crowd appeal.
The reverse of the coin features a close up view of the featured aircraft, the Snowbirds flying in a "Big Diamond" formation and the Snowbirds squadron crest. The cameo portrays the likeness of Edward Higgins, a former Vice-President of Canadair. Mr. Higgins was the driving force behind the design and construction of the Tutor. Ross Buckland, an internationally acclaimed aviation artist, created the design for this coin.
This coinis the sixteenth issue of Aviation collection and contains20 coins that have been released between 1990 and 1999.
