Description
The de Havilland Gipsy Moth
Originally from Great Britain, the de Havilland Moth, a light two-seat aircraft, became the standard equipment of most flying clubs of the world in the 1920's. Its success soon led to the establishment of the de Havilland subsidaries in Canada and Australia. In the early thirties, the Moth aircraft, renowned for its long distance performance and reliability becamne a familiar sight across Canada as a Flying Club aircraft, and was subsequently used for varied purpose such as training R.C.A.F. pilots, bush flying, as well as exploration and pleasure flight.
The design of artist John Mardon on the reverse of the coin depicts a Gipsy Moth just after take-off from the hangar detailedin the background. The cameo portrays Murton A. Seymour, the first pilot to be trained by the Aero Club of British Columbia. In 1939, he was named President of the Canadian Flying Club Association, and was awarded the Trans-Canada Trophy in 1940 in recognition of the outstandng leadership he gave to the Flying Clubs of Canada.
