With the release of the highly anticipated movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeTM, the Royal Canadian Mint is excited to introduce an unforgettable series of coins! Fearing the actions of a god-like SUPER HEROTM left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day saviour, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with BATMANTM and SUPERMANTM at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
Established with firm Canadian roots, SUPERMANTM was the first SUPER HEROTM, spawning countless new characters in the DC COMICSTM pantheon. He was the inspiration for a new archetype that not only still exists today, but is more popular than ever. Many important Canadian visionaries continue to shape the DC COMICSTM Universe even today, lending their talents as storytellers and further building on the history that began in 1938.
The Design:
The reverse image of the first coin features the application of vibrant colour over engraving in its recreation of the famous BATMANTM and SUPERMANTM logos. In the background, carefully positioned polygon shapes are contrasted through the use of frosted finishes in order to create a stunning “shattered glass” effect; this visual element is highly symbolic, for it represents the “shattering” of what was established in Man of SteelTM and the challenges that lie ahead after SUPERMANTM has revealed himself to the world. SUPERMANTM'S iconic red and yellow S-shield is superimposed over the black-coloured bat symbol of Gotham City’s DARK KNIGHTTM; the merging of these two logos represents the idea that despite the fact that they are at odds in Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeTM, the two SUPER HEROESTM are nonetheless part of the same “battle” for justice—a common purpose in spite of their different styles.
