Description
Composition: 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper
Mintage: 10 000
Imagine coming face to face with a creature that's almost the lenght of two city buses, with a head roughly the size of a couple of small familysedans and an appetite that demands millions of tiny krill each day.
The largest creature to make earth its home - the blue whale - is majestically recreated on the largest and highest-denomination ($10) stamp ever produced by Canada Post and on a sterling silver $10 coinissued by the Royal Canadian Mint.
Big speeds for a big whale
Blue whales tend to be loners, swimming alone or in pairs, but occasionally they travel in small groups. When feeding, they swim at a leisurely 3-6 km/hour, but can reach speeds of up to 35-40 km/hour if pursued, making them one of the fastest whale species. Found in all oceans of the world, closer to home, they roam the waters along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the south coast of Newfoundland, and in the Davis Strait between Baffin Island and Greenland. Pacific populations are located off Canada's west coast.
BLUE WHALE - 2010 CANADIAN COINS is categorised COINS AND PAPER MONEY / 08- ROYAL CANADIAN MINT / 10- FLORA, FAUNA & NATURE and sold by l'Imaginaire, a store and specialised website.
