Festivities begin with the selection of the honorary tuuniq (a member of the community who is much appreciated for his/her good works) ponctuated by a surge of excitement as traditions that have characterized the Arctic spring for millennia take hold. People of all ages participate in igloo building, hunting, harpoon throwing, whip cracking, tea brewing, and bannock making. Dog team rallies are held alongside snowmobile races of all kinds, designed to delight the novice and test the skill of the most accomplished snow traveller. Contemporary activities are given a unique twist as golf takes to the ice and kites are released into the Arctic air.
The ancient ritual of the community feast is also held where drum dancing, throat and aayaaya singing illuminate the enviable peace joy, and warmth of these Arctic people.
