This coin, designed by Friedrich Peter, commemorates the first Canadian Ski Racing and Ski Jumping Championships, heldin Rossland, B.C. in 1988. Imagine being there in the crowd and watching breathless, as pioneer ski racers zoomed down the icy slopes. Ski racing or "running" was new to Canada in the 19th century. Brought here by Sandinavian immigrants. Skiing quickly became part of life in Canada. Today, more than five million Canadians ski.
This coin is the second of the Canadian Sports Firsts Series that contains 12 coins. Four were released in 1998, four in 1999 and four in 2000.
