First Overseas Canadian Soccer Tour, 1888
This coin designed by Friedrich Peter, commemorates Canadian's first overseas soccer tour in 1888. The final match of the 23-game tour of Britain was played at the Kennington Oval, London. Ten thousand spectators watched skeptically to see how the colonials played Britain's national game. Though the British scored a narrow victory, the cliffhanger left them surprised and respectful, calling the Canadians "truly formaidable opponents". In Canada today, soccer is second only to hockey in popularity.
This coin is the third of the Canadian Sports Firsts Series that contains 12 coins. Four were released in 1998, four in 1999 and four in 2000.
