First International Yacht Race between Canada and United States, 1874
This coin, designed by Donald Curley, commemorates the first international yatching race between Canada andthe United States. In 1874 on Lake St. Clair, Ontario, the Annie Cuthbert, a yatch from Hamilton, Ontario, defeated the Cora from Chicago, Illinois to win the Goodwin Cup. The Goodwin Cup, originally donated by Queen Victoria for a British race in 1868 was soon renamed the Fisher Cup, and is one of the world's oldest international trophies for freshwater racing. The Annie Cuthbert was built in 1872 by Captain Alexander Cuthbert, an accomplished racing skipper who molded his boat afterflat-iron with sharp forwards. Purchased by an American in 1880 and renamed the Greyhound, both the boat and trophy were lost to history.
This coin is the sixth of the Canadian Sports Firsts Series that contains 12 coins. Four were released in 1998, four in 1999 and four in 2000.
