Reflections of Canada's prosperity - Canadian Pacific D10 Locomotive - Engine No. 926 (1911)
At the beginning of the 20th century, the steady movement of people and goods across the land was fueling the rapid development of Canada's West. Demand for rail transportation intensified and the Canadian Pacific Railway responded by introducing a larger, more powerful steam locomotive - the "Ten Wheeler" D10.
The D10's simple and dependable design was highly versatile, allowing it to move from passenger to freight or yard service with ease. TheD10 offered the lastest in locomotive engineering - piston valves, a "new" Walshaerts valve gear, and superheaters - innovations so effective that the D10 was used across Canada until the end of the steam era in the early 1960's.
Between 1905 and 1913, 502 D10's were built. Engine No.926 is one of seven surviving examples. It served Canada's transportation needs for 50 years and now stands on exhibit atthe Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa, Ontario.
This coin is the nineth issue of the Canadian transportations collection that was released between 2000 and 2003. The complete collection contains 12 coins; four on the land transportation, four on the sea transportation and four on the rail transportation.
