King of the road - Russell Model L Touring Car
The Russell, Canada's first really successful automobile, with a Canadian-built engine and chassis was produced by CCM (Canadian Cycle and Motor Company Ltd.), the company that is better known today for its bicycles and skates.
Named the "Russell" after CCM President, Thomas Alexander Russell, the first model was introduced in 1905. Modest in design yet remarkable in its performance, the Russell quickly rose to the heightsof the automotive industry as Canada's premier luxury vehicle until the First World War forever altered the course of this celebrated car.
The Model L of 1908 is perhaps the best remembered Russell because of its deluxe touring design. It had a four-cylinder, 24 hp engine, and extra wide 143.5 cm (56.5 in) wheels that prevented it from getting stuck in the carriage wheel ruts that characterized Canada's turn-of-the-centuary roads.
Today, only a few Russell exist. Restored models can be seen at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa, Ontario as well as at the Saskatchewan Western Development Museum in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
This coin is the fourth issue ofthe Canadian transportations collection that was released between 2000 and 2003. The complete collection contains 12 coins; four on the land transportation, four on the sea transportation and four on the rail transportation.
