Description
2021 $50 FINE SILVER COIN
LOST THEN FOUND: CHAMPLAIN AND THE ASTROLABE
Champlain’s “lost” astrolabe? The journey and discovery of a 17th century mariner’s astrolabe near Cobden, Ontario, is the inspiration for this 5 oz. fine silver coin. Intricately cast in pure silver, a small-scale reproduction of the navigational tool-turned-treasure tops the coin’s reverse, which features Samuel de Champlain’s map of New France (1632). It’s a nod to the era in which the astrolabe was made, used… and lost!
Cast in silver. The astrolabe rises from the coin’s surface thanks to high intricate casting, which gives it an almost 3D-like appearance — especially against the engraved map in the background.
The art of mapmaking. A mix of traditional and laser engraving techniques adds astounding dimension to the map that makes this a must-have piece for history and cartography enthusiasts.
Outstanding details. The astrolabe’s graduated scale is engraved near the rim in great detail.
High demand. This one will likely be a sought-after collectible — especially with a low mintage of 1,000 worldwide.
LOST THEN FOUND: CHAMPLAIN AND THE ASTROLABE - 2021 CANADIAN COINS is categorised COINS AND PAPER MONEY / 08- ROYAL CANADIAN MINT / 13- CANADIAN HISTORY and sold by l'Imaginaire, a store and specialised website.
