The latest edition in the Austrian Mint’s spectacular two-tone silver niobium coin series presents the world as a microcosm viewed through a microscope. A butterfly is first depicted in the center of the obverse, composed of raspberry red and grass green niobium. But the adventure truly begins on the reverse, with a microscopic view of a butterfly wing at the top of the coin’s central area. As the eye moves clockwise, it dives deeper using an electron microscope. Yet the journey doesn’t end there: the bottom of the coin shows a cell, its structure, and even its nucleus – a microcosm rich in detail and color.
By combining silver and niobium, the Austrian Mint has introduced an innovation recognized worldwide, with a level of quality unmatched by any other coin manufacturer to date. The hues of the niobium appear purely through the refraction of light on an ultra-thin transparent oxide layer, with no color application whatsoever.
