Description
2025 NATIVE AMERICAN 1 DOLLAR
"Nānā I Ke Kumu" by Mary Kawena Pukui "D"
This is the 17th coin of the series NATIVE AMERICAN 1 DOLLAR.
In 2009, the United States Mint began minting and issuing $1 coins featuring designs celebrating the important contributions made by Indian tribes and individual Native Americans to the history and development of the United States.
The 2025 Native American $1 Coin reverse (tails side) features Mary Kawena Pukui wearing a hibiscus flower, a kukui nut lei, and a muʻumuʻu adorned with an aloha print. Stylized depictions of water appear in the background. Inscriptions include “United States of America,” “$1,” and “Nānā I Ke Kumu,” which translates literally to “Look to the Source.”
Nānā I Ke Kumu is the title of a series of books that Pukui helped produce with the Queen Liliʻuokalani Children's Center. The phrase itself is considered very evocative of Pukui’s life, work, and legacy, as she was someone who was constantly consulted for her expertise on various aspects of Hawaiian knowledge. Hawaiian knowledge is symbolized through the leaves and nuts of Hawaii’s state tree, the kukui.
For 2025, the obverse (heads) design continues to feature a portrait of the central figure of Sacagawea, carrying her infant son, Jean-Baptiste. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
The year of minting, mint mark, and inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are incused on the edge of the coins.
This 2025 Native American $1 Coin with circulating finish have never been placed into circulation. It was minted at the Denver Mint.
