The Design

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of Canada's $1 coin  (alias, the loonie) the loon is honoured again, this time on the sterling silver proof dollar. For many, the laughter of the loon is the true voice of the Canadian wilderness. With tapered body and white-patterned plumage, the loon is a favourite subject of Canadian artists. It is often pictured gliding overthe glassy waters, alone, with a mate or with its young. Rarely is the loon depicted on the wing or just as it surges into flight. Due to the rearward position of its feet, the loon takes off with difficulty, running awkwardly on the water and beating its wings for one long moment before it soars skyward. For the 1997 Silver Proof Loon Dollar, artist Jean-Luc Grondin has chosen to portray the loon in that dramatic moment of simple , primitive power just before flight. The obverse bears the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt.
