The Path of Life - International Year of Older Persons
In order to increase international awareness of the world's aging population and the shift in perceptions and government policies required to support this trend, the United Nations declared 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons. The resolution signed October 1, 1998 calls for solidarity, respect, and mutual exchange between the generations - a strong and enduring partnership that will allow the world's elders to enjoy their golden years with dignity, self-fulfillment, and independence.
In Canada, the contributions of its elders and their significance to the nation's demographic profile cannot be denied. Today, seniors enjoy better health, greater vitality and will continue to play an increasingly active role in Canadian society. As a founding UN member-state, Canada has embraced the international resolution with a domestic initiative to create a "society for all ages".
