The Coinage of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

This set contains some of the last exemples of a coinage whose development can be traced back over more than twelve hundred years. Its foundation was the penny which was first introduced in the eighth century and for some five hundred years was virtually the only denomination to be minted. A great variety of new denominations were then added, mainly between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries, and many survived in active use until the eve of the introduction of the decimal coinage on 15th February, 1971.
