Iconic little blue pixies, The Smurfs made their first appearance in the Johan & Pirlouit album “The Smurfs and the Magic Flute”, created by Peyo in 1958. Since then, those blue characters, dressed with white pants and hats have been living many adventures in multiple albums.

In 2020, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to comics and to Peyo’s work but also to the hundred of iconic characters, all very much alike, but with such different nature.

Gargamel is a mean sorcerer who is helped by his cat Azrael and spends his time planning extravagant plans to catch the Smurfs. Luckily, the Smurfs always manage to thwart his plans.

Translating comic book characters is an interesting but perilous mission. The transition from comic strip to volume must faithfully transcribe the clear line of Peyo's work. These coins and medals are the faithful representation of a graphic line proper to the Franco-Belgian artist, it is a tribute in three dimensions paid by the craftsmen of Monnaie de Paris to the universe of the Smurfs.
