The Painting: Toronto Street, Winter Morning
Unlike the other Group members the city was a repeated subject in Harris' paintings and they shed light on the more private aspect of his oeuvre. He was attracted early in his career to the "Ward," a formerly genteel Victorian neighbourhood in Toronto that had, by Harris's time, fallen into decay. By 1920the Ward was primarily inhabited by poor and working-class immigrants.
