Description
Passion and prosperity along the iron road - 175th Anniversary of Canada's First Railway
For many, the story of Canada's railways conjures up images of the lasts pike that united the continent from coast to coast. Homewer, that gargantuan feat of engineering was the culmination of a 49-year long romance with the iron road that began with Canada's first public railway in 1836.
[...]
Construction began in January 1835 and by the end of the year most of the railway's infrastructure was in place. A steam locomotive, flatcars, baggage cars and four passenger cars were also on order. When the locomotive Dorchester was delivered, trialruns were done at night to avoid frightening the public.
[...]
Riding the railway became a major from entertainment. Even Charles Dickens is reputed to have chosen a train ride over Montreal's Theatres. Passangers were climbing on top of coaches and smuggling dogs into first-class. The number of families picnicking along the tracks became so numerous, they interrupted railway service.
Canada's love affair with the railway had begun. The iron road began to take off in all directions; spawning towns and cities; and ultimately unting the nation from coast to coast.
This coin is part of the 100-dollar coin collection which began in 1976. A coin has been released every year since then.
