One of Canada's greatest architectural landmarks - Notre Dame Basilica

Shop for a postcard of Montreal and no doubt you will find images ofNotre Dame Basilica among them, particulary images of its spectacularaltar - a masterpiece of guilded statues and handcrafted ornamentation that astounds visitors as much today as it did when the basilica first opened its doors to worshippers almost two centuries ago.

Its exterior is equally impressive - the two towers of its facade stand vigil over Notre Dame Street, custodians of Ville Marie's rich historythat began in 1642 and led to the basilica's inception in 1823.

The two towers are connected by the interior portico and the whole building is contained within one rectangle, a structure that was quite innovative for its time. The architect, James O'Donnell only added to the building's interest by infusing its distinctly classical structurewith gothic ornamentation - a move that greatly influenced the architecture of other parish churches in Quebec.
