First Official Amateur Figure Skating Championships, 1888

This coin, designed by Friedrich Peter, commemorates Canada's first national figure-skating championships, held in toronto in 1888. It was a time when the so-called "Fancy skating" was beginning to take off, with amateur skaters thronging the rink of skating clubs all over Canada. Organized competition, however, was in its infancy. Though the national championships lapsed in the years immediately after 1888, it was nevertheless the beginning of a competitive tradition that has since taken Canadians to the highest levels worldwide.

This coin is the first of the Canadian Sports Firsts Series that contains 12 coins. Four were released in 1998, four in 1999 and four in 2000.
