1999 sterling silver 50 cent piece
This coin, designed by Donald Curley, commemorates the first Grey Cup game. In 1909, the University of Toronto Blues were namedthe Dominion Football Champions after defeating a rugby team from theToronto Parkdale Canoe Club. The prize was a new trophy donated by Earl Grey, the Governor General of Canada - the Grey Cup. The Cup was crafted by Birks Jewellers at a cost of $48 to be an amateur trophy, butthe Cup became the pre-eminent prize in professional football by the 1930s. Canadian football evolved from the British game of rugby which was introduced to Canada by soldiers and immigrants in the mid 19th century. By 1909, our uniquely Canadian game had emerged.
