Mastering the power of diesel locomotion - Canadian National FA-1 diesel-electric locomotive - No. 9400 (1950)

It was April 12, 1950 when Sir Frederick carson Executive Vice-President of Montreal Locomotive Works proudly unveiled the first streamlined diesel-electric locomotive to be built in Canada - the FA-1 No. 9400. It was an impressive sight. Certainly, this sleek and modern locomotive could riseto the challenge.

The 9400 performed well. In 1956, it suffered a serious collision and its original cab was replaced with a more modern locomotive. By the time the 9400 retired in 1968, it had undergone numerous overhauls and looked much different than it had when first built. Regardless, in 1998 the Canadian Railroad Historical Association managed to restore the 9400 to its late 1950's look.

Althougha total of 412 FA-1 engines were built, only four are believed to exist in North America. One is engine no. 9400, the only one of its kind in Canada. It's on display at Exporail, the Association's museum in Delson/Saint-Constant, Quebec.

This coin is the eleventh issue ofthe Canadian transportations collection that was released between 2000 and 2003. The complete collection contains 12 coins; four on the land transportation, four on the sea transportation and four on the rail transportation.
