The Muskox

Superbly adapted to the harsh conditions of the far north, the muskoxen are descended from animals that crossed the Bering land bridge from Asia some 90, 000 years ago. The muskox - which the Inuit call the "animal with skin like a beard" - has a long thick coat which protects it and allows it to graze unaffected by temperatures of-40°C on the tundra og the High Arctic. The wool of the muskox is eight times warmer than sheep's wool and finer than cashmere. With keen eye-sight and sense of smell, the muskox can smell vegetation hidden under the snow and break through the crust of ice with its hooves to uncover twigs and leaves.
