Giants of prehistory
It is a discovery that sends hearts pounding - and opens a window to the mystifying world of dinosaurs. Their fossilized bones testify to the massive beasts that once ruled the earth but disappeared suddenly 65 millions years ago.
[...]
Euoplocephalus tutus was a large, 5.5m (18 ft) long armadillo-like creature that lived in Alberta between 76 and 70 million years ago. It weighed some 2.5 t (2.8 tn) and its back was covered with large and smallpieces of bony armour embedded in the skin. Even the dinosaur's eyelids were covered with moving bony plates. In fact, "Euoplocephalus tutus" means "well armoured head", a name derived from the ancient Greek language. Euoplocephalus was also equipped with a defensive tail club that was formed by four bony growths fused together.
Despite the warring impression of such extensive body armour, Euoplocephalus was a slow-moving herbivore that fed on fleshy, low-lying vegetation.
This coin is the fifth issue of the Dinosaurs collection.
The first coin of the series, released in 2007, depictsthe Parasaurolophus.
The second coin of the series, released in 2008, depicts the Triceratops.
The third coin of the series, released in 2009, depicts the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The fourthcoin of the series, released in 2010, depicts the Dromaeosaurus.
