Wherever ancient glaciers scoured away soil, the oldest rock on the planet lies exposed, sometimes emerging like "whalebacks" from the cobalt waters ofGeorgian Bay. But the rock is not completely barren; in every crevicethat sheltered fertile earth, life quickly took hold. Here, mosses and grasses defy the wrath of the wind and water and as one moves further inland, the presence of plant and animal life steadily grows. They are a unique blend of species from the boreal forests of the north and the broadleaf forests of the south, brought together in this transitional zone between two ecological regions. The change across larger islands can be significant, made all the more dramatic by the moderating effects of the bay.

It is a world unto itself - defined by ancient ice, wind, water and stone.
