Franklin Carmichael
As the youngest member of Canada’s famed Group of Seven, Franklin Carmichael (1890-1945) helped to define a new “Canadian” style of landscapeart in the 1920s and ‘30s – one that conveyed a deep lovefor the natural beauty of the rugged Canadian landscape. On the 125thanniversary of Franklin Carmichael’s birth, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates this highly respected artist with a stunning coin thatfaithfully one of the artists’s famed paintings.
Born on May 4, 1890 in Orillia, Ont., Franklin Carmichael showed an affinity for art at a young age; in his teenage years, he honed his artistic skills while working as a carriage striper in his father’sshop. After studying at the Ontario College of Art and the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp, Carmichael became a successfulcommercial artist. But his name is forever linked with the Group of Seven, who ignited a national art movement and ignited an artistic interest in Canada’s untamed landscapes.
This set is the second issue of the Painters collection.
The first set of the series, released in November 2014, depicts the Artwork by Cornelius Krieghoff.
The second and the last set of the series, released in February 2015, depicts the Artwork by Franklin Carmichael.
