Description

The self-contained manga by fan-favorite creator Douman Seiman (The Voynich Hotel) that won the Seiun Sci-Fi Award! Follow the tale of an Earthling determined to find out why his home planet was destroyed…while sleeping with as many alien girls as possible.

It can be pretty lonely being the only member of your species—just ask “Bub”, an amnesic Earthling who woke up in outer space and discovered that Earth had been destroyed. As he travels through multiple universes, Bub must figure out his past, what happened to his home planet, and how to best pick up alien chicks—the human race won’t repopulate itself, after all!

A search of meaning
HOW MANY LIGHT YEARS TO BABYLON? Is mostly a comedy manga. It does have some sci-fi elements to it however, I would not buy it solely based on the sci-fi. It revolves around the sole survivor of the earth, Bub, and his quest to find out how the earth ended and how he managed to escape his doom. There is not much that can be said besides something that would spoil it but if you were into hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy this is right up your alley. I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would but that could be due to the fact that I went into it with a mindset that it would be more sci-fi than comedy. The only thing that I did not like is that the problems were solved the right way instead of having some challenges to it, however, again that is to be expected when it is a standalone manga. I would still recommend it since I did enjoy reading though, it just really depends on the person’s taste.

Readers beware; Not for kids
I would like to start by saying that I totally adore Douman Seiman's work, with a preference for his earlier work "The Voynich Hotel", but as much as I enjoyed this one, it isn't for everyone. Douman is fairly liberal when it comes to sexuality and isn't affraid to put any in his work, I've seen a lot of reviews online calling this straight up porn but I wouldn't go that far. On this note he is more akin to french comics artists whereas France has a healthier relation with sexuality than many other countries, tho the characters in most of Douman's works can be outright perverts. Right away, you guess this isn't for the younger audience, even if the cover would let some think so. The artstyle is fairly unique, tho I had a preference for his earlier works, but for a manga, you won't find anything similar in the field, some hate it and some love it, I personnally really enjoy this uniqueness. The fact that this is a one-shot is nice too, no need to wait for any new release, but this author and artist is known for doing short skits (Voynich is actually 3 books). For the narration, the story feels kind of like a fever dream, where some things seems to change on a whim, and things you though got ruled out just make a comeback out of the blue and nobody seems to care much about it, reminds me of some anime dream sequences I've seen in the past but can't really pinpoint which one. If you enjoy chaotic storytelling, you will enjoy this one.
Finally, you can always consider this a big experimental work from the author. I am personnally glad to have added this one to my collection, but (saddly not available at this store) I would recommend the 3-book serie "The Voynich Hotel" before I could recommend this one. It isn't bad in my book, but if anyone start with this one, they might not be interested in looking up the artist's other works as much as if they started with another.
