This coin, designed by Friedrich Peter, commemorates thatthrilling moment on October 8, 1978, in Montreal, when a red Ferrari,driven by Gilles Villeneuve, roared into the lead and over the finishline. It was the first time that a Canadian had won a Formula One Grand Prix race, and the crowd exploded in wild national pride. Since then, many young Canadians have been inspired by Villeneuve's victory to participate in this demanding sport.
