On the road to a safer tomorrow - The Bricklin SV-1 (1975)

Its trademark gull-winged doors made the Bricklin SV-1 one of the most memorable cars of the 1970's. The name "SV-1" stood for "Safety Vehicle 1" and the Bricklin was indeed the first - and only - one of its kind.

Hailed as the safest production ever built, the Bricklin featured many innovations: urethane bumpers, a fuel tank enclosure, roll cage and tubular steel framed passenger compartment. Even its futuristic "gull-winged" doors were designed for safety - they required a mere12" clearance and opened well out of the way of traffic.

The Bricklin's acrylic body also promised to revolutionize automaking by delivering a lighter, more durable construction that would significantlyenhance the car's overall performance.

The first Bricklin rolled off the production line on July 1, 1974 in St-John, New-Brunswick. Annual production targeted 100,000 cars within four years but administrative problems forced Bricklin Canada to close its doors just 15 months later after having produced only 2,854 cars. Today, an estimated 1,500 Bricklins are believed to exist throughout North America.

This coin is the twelveth issue of the Canadian transportations collection that was released between 2000 and 2003. The complete collection contains 12 coins; four on the land transportation, four on the sea transportation and four on the rail transportation.
