Common Loon
Based on an image by Canadian nature photographer Jim Cumming, the reverse transports the viewer to one of Ontario’s many lakes, where an iconic common loon ( Gavia immer ) has set up its summer home. Gliding across the glassy surface of its habitat, the loon tilts upwards in the water to stretch itswings, which offers the viewer a better glimpse of its remarkab le wing feathers. The application of vibrant colour recreates the life - like qualities of the original photograph and captures the loon in fine detail, from its checkered plumage to the unique black - and - white collar beneath its jet - black head. The engraving brings a beautiful element of dimension to the overall design, which truly conveys the wild, untamed beauty of Ontario’s lakes.
This coin is thefirst issue of Celebrating Canada's 150th collection. A total of 13 coins, representing the 13 Canadian provinces and territories, will be released every month between June 2016 and July 2017.
